Workshop Schedule

A former Peace Corps volunteer in Morocco, Dr. Toler taught at AUI upon its founding in the mid-1990’s, prior to joining Binghamton University in the United States, one of the first institutional partners of AUI. A facilitator of intercultural dialogue and collaboration, Dr. Toler is a board member of the American Institute for Maghreb Studies (AIMS).  He was the founding editor of NITLE’s Arab Culture and Civilization Online Resource and facilitated the emergence and development of intercampus collaborations for teaching about Islam, North Africa, and the Middle East.  He has led or facilitated workshops on topics such as technologies for teaching writing, information overload and teaching digital natives.

His formal education includes a Ph.D. in Comparative Literature and Translation Studies from Binghamton University (2002), where his dissertation focused on the Francophone novel from North Africa, its dialogue with North African historiography, and the manner in which these novels are rendered in English Translation.  His scholarly interests and publications have included contributions in cinema, popular music and new media from the region.  In 2008, he organized the annual conference of the American Institute for Maghrib Studies on Cinema and the Maghreb.

Dr. Toler is a translator of North African (especially Moroccan and Algerian) literature from French and Arabic into English.  Dr. Toler also serves as a board member for the Tangier American Legation Institute for Moroccan Studies.
